Tweaking Windows XP

Well here are some tips to tweak Windows XP to make your system run faster. These should only be done by experienced computer users. If you want one on one help you can go to The Computerz101 Forums @ http://computerz101.20.forumer.com/ You'll need to register and post your questions and you can also get my contact information @ www.computerz101.com/faq.html near the bottom for faster service thank you. Tweaking Windows XP by Mike!

I will add more tweaks once a week or so.

Follow these steps below:

1. A faster Windows shutdown
Shutting down Windows can take a long time. You can speed this up (at your own risk) with the following tweaks in the registry key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\DesktopChange the following String values:AutoEndTasks=1HungAppTimeout=4000WaitToKillAppTimeout=4000WaitToKillServiceTimeout=4000

2. Finding out the reason of a Windows crash
If you would like to know the reason why there was a sudden crash of Windows, change the DWORD-value ShutdownReasonUI temporarily to 1 in the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ReliabilityAfter a reboot you will find the reason why your Windows shuts down suddenly in the log files (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Logfiles). If you are finished analyzing, change the value ShutdownReasonUI back to 0.

3. ------Increase BROADBAND speed in WinXP *Should work for 56k also* ----

1. make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
2. start - run - type gpedit.msc (not available in home version)
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9.where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0
Effect is immediate on some systems, some need to re-boot. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self, even with QoS disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth.

I will add some more tweaks next week. Enjoy. Don't forget to check out our website for more information @ www.computerz101.com Thanks Mike!

Is your PC slowing you down?

A friend of mine recently called me to get advice on some computer problems he was having. He had finally taken the plunge and traded in his 8 year old PC for a top of the line computer. New with the latest technology, he felt confident that slow loading programs, computer crashes and freezes were now behind him.
After just a couple of weeks he noticed that his new computer was not running as fast as it had when he first got it. I could tell that he was really frustrated. Who could blame him right? He had just spent a lot of money for this new machine that was supposed to make his life easier.
Unfortunately, this is the kind of situation that I come across time and time again. It doesn't matter how new or old your computer is. Over time, you accumulate error files that slow down your applications and can even cause crashes. The more you use your computer, the more error files are created. The most frustrating thing is that these error files are created from simple day-to-day computer usage. You don't even have to do anything wrong to be affected. But you'll feel your PC slowing down significantly over time.
Most people in this situation just give in and spend a fortune for another new computer. Luckily for my friend, I was able to recommend PC SpeedScan Pro. This easy-to-use program scans your computer for all the harmful errors that are hurting your computer's performance. With just one click of a button, you can fix all these errors so that your computer runs like new again.
My friend now runs a weekly scan to find and fix any new error files and keeps his investment in top shape. So don't despair if your computer has slowed down over time, whether it's brand new or it's been part of your life for some time. With PC SpeedScan Pro, you too can have your computer running like new again, as fast as the first day you took it out of the box.
You can test PC SpeedScan Pro for free at www.pcspeedscan.com/ just click download now. For more information relating to this subject an other areas of computers please feel free to go to www.computerz101.com there you will find information on anti-virus, spyware softwares and others to speed up your computer such as TuneUp Utilities 2007 enjoy.

Spam Help

WHAT IS SPAM?
Spam refers to electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited e-mail.In addition to being a nuisance, spam also eats up a lot of network bandwidth. Because the Internet is a public network, little can be done to prevent spam, just as it is impossible to prevent junk mail. To get more information on spam and how to remove it please go to http://www.computerz101.com/faq.html Thanks. Mike!

What is Spyware?

What is Spyware? any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes is known as Spyware. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet; however, it should be noted that the majority of shareware and freeware applications do not come with spyware. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers read more on spyware at http://www.computerz101.com/faq.html

Windows Vista Yikes!

To start off the new year it's obviously about windows vista. Windows Vista came out in-stores on the first tuesday of feburuary. There is so much talk and press about Windows Vista it's unbelievable. All i have to say is stay clear of buying Windows Vista right away. The reason why i say that is the people are the test dummies at this moment. Why not wait until Windows Vista is perfected by almost 90% in about a year and cheaper? That sounds like the best possible solution right. Right now there scrambling to sell all four versions of windows vista. All the companies who make video cards, sound cards, software and etc. are still trying to come out with the windows vista patches and such. Before you consider buying vista listen to this. Windows Vista uses soo many resources it's like putting windows 2000 on a early IBM system that only has 32 megs of ram, 2 gig hd, and so on you see the point. Yes it looks very nice. If you have a top of the line computer then yes i would encourage buying Windows Vista, but if you have a 2002 computer or older then i would suggest upgrading your processor and memory or buying a new pc.
